I don't pretend to know much about fashion - I have a personal style, but it hinges less on what's popular at the moment than what I like. I've been told I'm pretty minimalistic - I stay away from prints, prefering texture if I want to mix up my routine of black and white.
However, when I'm searching for fashion inspiration or style advice, I want to hear from real girls with real budgets (hello, whowhatwear, I can't spend $500 on boots today). I'm a young professional, barely out of college, with a salary that represents that fact. With my hectic life commuting into the city I also want pieces that are easy, versatile, and comfortable. I always see these buzzwords advertised, but they point me to brands like Everlane which while great, are still out of my price range unless I'm really feeling like treating myself.
So where do I shop? Forever21 is my bread and butter. Urban Outfitters is just a step up. H&M, the office appropriate version of Forever. You know, the usual 20-something-and-I-need-to-clothe-myself-in-something-other-than-sweatpants-today brands.
Thank goodness Forever is starting to make more quality clothes that don't fall apart!
I preface this post with all these disclaimers because this is my first fashion post. Read on if you're a girl in the same shoes as me (that you bought in high school and are trying to make last just one more season!)
When traveling, I have an especially hard time choosing what kinds of outfits to pack - you want to bust out those pieces from the back of your closet that need to see some sun, but you're unsure how practical they are.
On my third trip to Asia, I'm traveling in Cambodia and Thailand. We have an adventure packed schedule of walking, hiking, sight-seeing, elephant riding, and beach going. That means a diverse wardrobe has to cram into a carry-on for two weeks.
This is where I made a surprising discovery: JUMPSUITS AND ROMPERS.
I was the owner of one sole romper, a denim one, and hadn't yet made the plunge into the land of jumpsuits. I'd only seen the posh ones that seemed to be the pantsuit of the future. But one day, as I was browsing urbanoutfitters.com, I happened upon a simple lightweight woven jumpsuit in black. It had 3/4 sleeves and no frills - it looked soft and comfy.
Behold, it turned out to be the best thing I packed for this trip so far. I wore it for touring Angkor Wat - aka, nearly 8 hours of walking and climbing stairs in the hot sun. You may ask why I didn't opt for shorts instead? Well, as a religious site, visitors must have their shoulders and legs covered. Not only did it meet both of these requirements, as a single unit it was super ideal for excessive walking - I made zero adjustments throughout the day. It just stay put. To top it all off, it looked ten times more fashion forward than the ugly hiking pants I saw around me, paired perfectly with my black nike frees and was 200% effortless.
And my personal favorite part: it took up almost no room in my suitcase. Winning. I'm wearing my lightweight romper tomorrow to ride some elephants! Pack one for your next trip, it won't disappoint.
